The final of the Cecil Leitch 5 Club Competition took place at the splendid Rochester & Cobham Park Golf Club on the 4th June 2009 with over one hundred finalists representing over 60 of Kent’s finest golf clubs. Competitors had battled their way through the preliminary rounds, held earlier this year, at their respective clubs with around 3,400 original entrants, to enjoy a day of sunshine and golfing achievement.

Our thanks go to Mr Christopher Horne, Chairman of Rochester & Cobham Park for inviting us to use the wonderful facilities and Mr John Aughterloney, Club Manager,for his help and professionalism in organising the event.

The magnificent condition of the course bought forth many favourable comments from the competitors even though at times, their golf had been indifferent. Our praise and gratitude must go to Barry Coveney, Head Grounds Man, and all the ground staff at Rochester & Cobham Park Thanks also go to the Rochester & Cobham Park Men’s Captain. Mr Bob Hawker. who presented the men’s prizes and Rochester & Cobham’s Lady Captain, Maria Dolphin, who presented the women’s prizes. They both made all feel very welcome.

The Men’s Competition was a ‘sizzler’ with fine scoring and with two players finishing with 39 points, The eventual winner, Gordon Hayward, having to be decided by countback on the final nine holes. Roger Brain was the unlucky loser and he was just one point ahead of third placed Paul Davies .

Nearest the Pin went to Mark Moore of Homelands Golf Club

The Ladies Competition also proved to be a close affair and again just one point separated the first four competitors. the winner was Pamela Cooper of Sene Valley Golf Club with 37 points. Runner-Up was Julie Monkman of Kings Hill Golf Club who just pipped Lindsey Hesmondalgh of Princes Golf Club after countback on the final nine holes.

Both scored 36 points. as did Lindsey Robinson of Sittingbourne Golf Club who finished in fourth place. The Golf Committee decided that such a good score should not go unrewarded and also presented her with a prize. Brenda Greenfield of Sheerness Golf Club received a special prize from the KCPFA’s Golf Chairman Mr Richard Young for a Hole in One at the 8th.

 

Finally a cheque was presented to Richard Young,President of Kent Schools Golf Association by Geoff Cooke,President KCPFA.
